Do RVs and Motorhomes Need a CARB Clean Truck Check in California?

ยท CARB Diesel Test

Yes. A California-registered diesel motorhome needs a CARB Clean Truck Check if its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is over 14,000 pounds, which covers virtually every Class A diesel pusher. Gasoline RVs and zero-emission vehicles are exempt. The good news: you do not have to move the coach, because testing comes to you.

Fast facts

  • Applies to: diesel motorhomes and RVs over 14,000 lbs GVWR registered in California. Most Class A diesel pushers qualify.
  • Exempt: gasoline-powered RVs, zero-emission vehicles.
  • Test type: OBD for 2013 and newer engines; OVI (smoke opacity and visual inspection) for 2012 and older.
  • Frequency for non-commercial motorhomes: annual (and they stay annual even after the 2027 quarterly change for commercial trucks).
  • Where: at your home, driveway, or storage lot. No need to drive the coach to a station.

Does my motorhome actually qualify?

The Clean Truck Check applies to heavy-duty diesel vehicles over 14,000 pounds GVWR that operate on California public roads, and California-registered motorhomes are included. A typical Class A diesel pusher weighs well above that threshold, so if you own one, plan on periodic testing. Gasoline motorhomes and zero-emission coaches are not subject to the program.

OBD or OVI for an RV?

It comes down to engine model year. Diesel pushers built on 2013 and newer engines take the electronic OBD test, which reads the emissions computer and uploads results on the spot. Coaches on 2012 and older engines take the OVI test, a smoke opacity reading plus a visual inspection. We are credentialed for both and bring the right equipment based on the engine you tell us about when you book.

How often do RV owners test?

Non-commercial motorhomes are on an annual schedule, and they remain annual even after commercial OBD trucks move to quarterly testing in October 2027. One test a year keeps a personal diesel coach compliant. Your specific deadline is assigned by VIN and visible in the CARB Clean Truck Check portal.

Why mobile testing makes sense for a coach

Moving a 40-foot diesel pusher for a test is a project: fuel, careful maneuvering, and a lost day. Mobile testing removes all of it. Our credentialed tester comes to your home, driveway, or storage facility, runs the OBD or OVI procedure right there, and uploads compliance before leaving. For a 2013-or-newer coach passing OBD, the DMV hold clears the same business day.

We regularly test RVs and motorhomes across Folsom and the Folsom Lake area, Elk Grove, and Chico, plus the rest of our Northern California and Bay Area coverage. Book your coach at (916) 538-7777.
