OBD vs. OVI: Which Clean Truck Check Test Does Your Diesel Truck Need?
When scheduling your CARB Clean Truck Check test, it's important to know whether your heavy-duty vehicle requires an OBD Test or an OVI Test. The difference is critical and depends entirely on your engine's model year.
1. OBD Periodic Testing (2013 Model Year & Newer)
Who Needs It: Trucks, buses, and RVs with engines built in 2013 or later that are equipped with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD).
What it Is: This is a non-invasive, digital test where our technician connects a device to your truck's diagnostic port to read emissions-related fault codes and system readiness.
The Mobile Advantage: Because this test is digital, the results are instant and can be uploaded immediately, clearing compliance holds the same day.
2. OVI Periodic Testing (2012 Model Year & Older)
Who Needs It: Trucks, buses, and RVs with engines built in 2012 or earlier.
What it Is: This is a manual test involving two components:
Opacity Test: Measuring the density of the exhaust smoke (using the SAE J1667 procedure).
Visual Inspection: Checking key emission control devices for signs of tampering or damage.
The Mobile Advantage: Performing the smoke test on-site saves your older vehicle unnecessary travel, and our certified technicians ensure the thorough visual inspection is completed correctly the first time.
Knowing which test your fleet needs helps you plan your compliance timeline efficiently.
